Last week Daddy’s Junky Music abruptly closed all their stores throughout New England. For those who live in the North East, the family owned Daddy’s music stores have been a cultural icon for 40 years.

Daddy’s is where millions of Americans bought their first guitar, learned to play the bass, met other musicians, got to visit with touring superstars, and even performed at frequent open mic nights on the in-store stages.

The Daddy’s stores were run by musicians for musicians. They accepted ALL used instruments with generous credit toward a new instrument or cash. This policy, virtually unknown in the music business, was a catalyst behind making New England one of the most exciting music scenes in American history.

In recent years the New England states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Maine) have had more local performances, more active online discussion groups for musicians, and far more trading of musical instruments. Just check and Craigslist for a taste.

Daddy’s was clearly behind all this. Yet the music retail business is one of small profits and tough competition. You don’t own a music store to get rich. You do it for the love of music.

Financial Problems Due to Recession

Daddy’s owner Fred Bramante (who started the first location with just a few hundred dollars and some old guitars) continued to put Daddy’s locations in more communities. Just like virtually every other American business, he did this by borrowing expansion capital from a commercial bank. In this case — GE Capital. GE Capital is the bank division of General Electric.

Then in 2008 the Great Recession hit and sales slumped. Daddy’s figured they could work harder, plan smarter, save money where ever they could, and weather the storm.

This year, with the recession dragging on longer than expected, Daddy’s closed several less popular stores and tightly focused their product lines. Bramante reported in many press interviews that they were optimistic their earnings would be back on track after the Holiday Season.

This is the standard scenario for almost all of America’s retail businesses both large and small. As much as half of the year’s sales are earned during the Christmas season.

But a catastrophe was just around the corner. In late October Daddy’s received orders from their bank to pay $3 Million within five days or else lose the entire Daddy’s chain.

Bramante said in newspaper and radio interviews this demand was unexpected. Daddy’s had no choice but to shut down all their stores and layoff more than 100 employees. Thousands of customers were left in the lurch after putting money down on orders, paying for orders that could not be delivered, or stuck with worthless gift cards and credits that could not be redeemed.

Daddy’s explained on their Facebook site EVERYTHING they owned, including bank accounts, were being controlled by the bank. The stores were powerless to help customers.

A Simple Songwriting Tip for Coming Up With Chord Progressions for Your Songs

One way to come up with a chord progression is to take a chord progression from a song we like and change the length of each chord, independent of its strumming pattern, tempo or anything else.

We’ll do this in one of two ways:

Lengthening each chord (doubling each one is usually easiest to apply)

Shortening each chord (halving each one is usually easiest to apply)

Or you can use a combination of the above. Shorten some chords, and lengthen others. You can even keep one or two chords the same length as they were in the original song.

Let’s use the chorus of “American Pie” by Don McLean as an example. The chords in the chorus where the lyrics are “Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie” are G-C-G-D. The song is in 4/4 time and each one of those chords is played for about 2 beats.

Grab your guitar or keyboard and play those chords either to a metronome, or while tapping your foot, to get a feel for the length of each two-beat chord.

Got it?

Now play those same chords, but play each one for four beats instead of two. Do you see how it gave the song an different feel? It sounds like you’re playing it at half tempo now. It sounds different than the original, but let’s change it some more to give it a more different feel.

Try this. Play the first and third chords (the G chords) for two beats each, and play the second and fourth chords (the C and the D) for eight beats each. So in 4/4 time, it’ll be like this:

G (for 2 beats) – C (for 8 beats) – G (for 2 beats) – D (for 8 beats)

Do you hear how different that sounds from “American Pie?” Pretty cool right? You have the same exact chords, with the same exact tempo and strumming pattern, but by simply changing the length of only two of the chords (the C and the D – we kept the length of the G chords the same as the original), we have a completely new sound. I just came back from my yoga practice and I was angrier then when I entered. I let my mind wonder inwardly and let feelings distract me. Why? Today we listened to classical music, which I found distracting. Other times, the music of the yoga class has been without melody and rhythm; The rhythm of the music influenced my body rhythm. My mind was not still, because I was subconsciously following the melody.

I was singing along Antonioni’s Adagio and Beethoven’s Pathetique. They were sounds and melodies that brought me to a personal place of memories of the past, when I was an active musician.

How seductive, and controlling music is. It is always palpable. The steady beat of the marches coercing armies into war, to the rock and roll sounds to change one’s mood but seeking a connection, the languid Latin love songs and ballads that entice us to love even for a moment, to the languid rhythm to dance to connect sexually, to the lullabies to seduce a baby to sleep.

Still in my post-yoga meditating state, my mind went to The Fez Sacred Music Festival in Morocco, which I assisted in a study, during my doctoral research, on the different responses to music. I remembered how I felt suspended in Fez, listening to the Sufi orchestra. Because I could not sing along with it, I felt very much in the NOW and no personal memories surfaced. Non-western music, syncopated and dissonant with droning sounds; is meant to transcend spirituality and physicality, in attempts to re-experience the union with the divine, rather than attempting to generate humanly love and personal memories.

Where words and melodies of the Western world are meant to connect you with your personal memories, music without words, or words we don’t understand and melodies that we can’t follow or predict have a more transcendence of selflessness. Secular music attempts to generate humanly love. The Supreme connection in sacred music is the Collective Unconscious, the Universe. The connection in secular music is a Personal Unconscious, the union between two people. Where secular music attempts to transfix listeners in the present, sacred music carries us beyond it. Past and future are implicit as they represent the meaning of the ritual.

With Fez music, I felt connected universally and cosmically. This morning I was not able to connect with my inner self, because the melodies distracted me, brought back memories. I felt seduced by the melody that is very much still in my cortex.

As I am writing I am singing to the Pathetique, and it is bringing me to a place that I really did not choose. I want to feel again the divine connection that I felt listening to the Sufi music. I would like to release this sensation in my cortex, and just be.
